Houllier: Set for two-year deal
The expected appointment of Gerard Houllier as the new manager of Aston Villa has been defended by a member of the club's board.
General Charles C. Krulak, a non-executive director and close ally of Villa owner Randy Lerner, has hit back at fans' criticism of the impending arrival of the Frenchman.
Former Liverpool and Lyon boss Houllier is understood to be set to agree a two-year contract as successor to Martin O'Neill ahead of Monday's match at Stoke City, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1.
Some Villa followers are less than impressed with Lerner's apparent decision, but General Krulak believes that the 63-year-old, who led Liverpool to a famous domestic-European cup Treble in 2001, has all the right credentials.
"Whatever anyone thinks of him, he deserves respect from the fans of this club," The Times quotes General Krulak as telling a fans' message board.
"He has a fine record with multiple clubs and deserves better for the amount of effort he has put into his chosen career than to be ridiculed by AVFC.
"And that is just one person, who has been taken apart on the three sites I post on. We are bigger than that. As I have said many times, we can disagree all we want, but we should do it respectfully.
"It makes little sense to me to pick out one or two candidates and run threads on how much we don't want them or how bad they would be for the club.
"Any manager worth his salt is going to do some due diligence on the club and that would probably include reading up on the fans and the type of support they might receive."

Jeremy Williams says...
Is the General serious? It does show a lack of knowledge in terms of football which is only to be expected from someone who has only been involved for a couple of years. Houllier did his treble in 2001! He has guided Lyon to league victory in a relatively weak league and has not managed in football since 2007. In what respect are the dissenting villa fans being unfair to Houllier when they say he is not the man for the job?
