Shay Given will have a scan on his injured groin on Monday, while his fellow Newcastle team-mate Peter Ramage is set for a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
Irish keeper Given limped out of Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham having landed awkwardly when attempting to claim a cross.
Given received treatment on the field, but was unable to continue and manager Glenn Roeder has revealed that the injury will be assessed on Monday.
"He will have a scan on Monday morning," said Roeder.
"It's hard to find the words to describe somebody who hardly ever missed a game in five seasons but suffered a shocking injury, ironically, at West Ham that required an operation, and now he has damaged his groin.
"We are just fortunate to have a goalkeeper in Steve Harper who is undoubtedly of Premiership class, but we just hope Shay is not going to be out a long time."
Ramage is facing a number of weeks on the sidelines, as he pulled up sharply with a hamstring injury against The Hammers.
"It will probably put him out for a couple of weeks," noted Roeder.
It would appear that Ramage and Given will at least find some elbow room in the treatment room as Titus Bramble, Damien Duff and Celestine Babayaro are on their way back to fitness.
"I've got players coming back from injury," said Roeder. "Titus Bramble is back in training and Damien Duff and Celestine Babayaro will be fit for the Aston Villa game."
