Shearer: Told Magpies need experienced boss
What I can say is that if you want someone to galvanise the dressing room, get them organised and playing then, yes, I think I could do that.
Alan Shearer
Quotes of the week
Alan Shearer claims Newcastle do not want him as their next manager.
The former Toon captain wants to help revive the club in any way he can and is willing to work with whoever is appointed as Sam Allardyce's successor.
Despite having no coaching experience, Shearer believes he could do the top job.
But the club have made it clear they are seeking a seasoned campaigner and have told the former England captain he does not fit the bill yet.
Shearer told the Sun: "A couple of days after Sam Allardyce got the sack, I got a call from the club to say they were looking for an experienced manager, which ruled me out.
"What I can say is that if you want someone to galvanise the dressing room, get them organised and playing then, yes, I think I could do that.
"If they want that and someone with experience then I'm not that man.
"If they had asked me to meet the chairman to talk about this job, I would have done it."
On the prospect of working under the club's new boss, Shearer dded: "People have talked about me being a number two under an experienced manager.
"But if they are after an experienced manager, which they are, he will no doubt want his own man.
"All I would say is that if someone comes in and wants to talk to me, I would be willing to help in any way I can."
Shearer believes experience is not everything and cited Kevin Keegan as Newcastle's most successful boss in recent times.
Like Shearer, Keegan had no managerial experience before taking over at St James' Park, while a series of more seasoned successors have failed in the hotseat.
A Keegan-Shearer double act is the fans' preferred choice to make up the next coaching team and Shearer hailed the man who signed him for a world record £15million in 1996 as "a special person with great charisma".
Since retiring from playing 18 months ago, Shearer has worked as a television pundit but has always been viewed as a Newcastle manager in waiting.
His shadow looms large over St James' Park and Allardyce struggled to escape it during his ill-fated eight months in charge.
However, Shearer denied he had done anything to undermine the former Bolton boss and insisted he was not given enough time in the role.
As for Allardyce's successor, Shearer said it needed to be someone capable of achieving a top-six position and challenging for trophies.

Absolutely astounded that Keegan could swallow his pride and go back to the club that treated him so shabbily! Then again maybe he is the best they could get!!!

i think it is time to give it to shearer its wat the fans want so mike should give it to him. he will bring the good times back to the club thats been missing since keegan left. if shearer does not get the job the fans will not be happy till he gets the job so lets give it to the big man

I am so sick of everyone who is slating newcastle and Mike Ashley for doing what he felt was in the best interests for NUFC! He got shot of sam for the shocking performances we were putting in and the pathetic 1 point from two teams that will go down, if not will stay up by the skin of the teeth! As for those who claim newcastle is not a big club, have a look at the fan base, the fact we are in the top 20 richest clubs in the world based on profits and see the other teams below us then you will see we should and will be at the top where we belong!!! howay the lads!

Why is everyone saying the Alan Shearer has no experience? The man has been involved in top flight football his entire life, led his club and his country, he is a man of strength and character and is definitly capable of making tough decisions. Just because he hasn't managed a club before, doesn't mean he hasn't got the knowledge or attributes to do so. Even the club aspects (i.e. youth development) he hasn't been exposed to come with staff who have! I personally feel he would be a fantastic manager, give him the chance, sink or swim? Alan Shearer is a swimmer.

Alan Shearer hasn't got any experience in managing a football club but the fans want him installed as manager because he's a Geordie.....what happens if Alan Shearer fails?...(And theres a good chance he will with no experience)..Will he get more than 24 games?..it madness.they havent won anything in 50 years....Newcastle need an experienced manager and he must be given a couple of seasons to make any impact....Clubs like Aston Villa and Everton must be laughing right now...

I'm afraid that Newcastle United are not the big club they think they are. They've got a big stadium, granted. They've got some big players on ridiculous over-inflated wages, granted. Unfortunately they haven't got the clout to attract a top manager like Houllier, Mourinho or even the likes of Redknapp or Hughes. To go back to Keegan would be a step backwards, to go to Shearer would be a giant leap indeed. A giant leap straight down to the Championship.

I'm liking the idea of Deschamps and Zola, what a team that would be. Many players would love to play for them; attracting quality would be easy. Jose Mourinho got sacked by Abramovich for palying dull football. The last thing we need is him. Whoever we get, the fans and owner need to give them time, at least two seasons.

It seems a little strange that with all the managerial sackings this season it is only Newcastle fans that see Kevin Keegan / Alan Shearer as a top pairing likely to bring the club success. Has Keegan been linked with any other managers job this year? I dont think so!! I think you will find that there is a reason for that.!! The man hasnt got a clue. Add Alan Shearer to that and we can all look forward to Newcastle sliding back into the championship where they belong. A BIG CLUB?? I think not.

I am firmly in the Shearer camp. Shearer's commitment to Newcastle is astonishing in this day and age. The great man has dedicated the best years of his professional career to us, placing club before country in a quest for silverware. I'd imagine he feels there's work left to be done. Nobody in Football can question Big Al's 100% commitment, desire and determination. As for leadership skills - he led the National team upon request of countless England coaches. Stability in the table this season would gift the club time in the summer to attract players. I'm confident that AS can attract real talent to Tyneside. An enormous lift is what this club and these fans need - there's no doubt a Shearer (and perhaps a counterpart) would be worth a shot, after all, NUFC have tried everything else! Arise King Alan!

If a manager is not picked by tonights match the crowd will tell you who they want and that will be Shearer by himself or partnered with Kevin Kegan

I don't know where all the Newcastel fans get the idea that they are a big club, there is a difference between being "big" and well supported. If Man Utd got the results Newcastle have this year there manager would still be in place. I think the Newcastle fans need to be realistic about where they are and how hard it is to get where they want to be. Everton or spurs (best of the rest) have given money and support over a period of time and have got the foundations in place to step things up, they will possibly make a break through soon and that should be the blue print for other clubs like Newcastle. Rome wasn't built in a day

How can a big club like Newcastle want to appoint a Shearer/Keegan combination when you read the following points 1..Keegan always walks when the going gets tough 2..Is not tactitally astute 3..Shearer has no knowledge of manageing 4..If Shearer wants to manage a club why doesnt he sever all ties with Newcastle and go and manage any other club either be it in the old 2nd ,3rd or 4th divisions and gain experiance there

Why are we concentrating exclusively on the manager when it's the overpaid, prima donnas on the pitch who are responsible, week in ,week out, for playing like a bunch of donkeys. Knock a zero off their weekly wages and don't put it back until the attitudes of the players have changed.

Ashley has to be carefull, i think he will be good for the club in the long term, but i think any one he appoints other than three people will only be after his money. I respect Rednap for turning down the job, i think he would have done a good job. The other two men would be shearer and keegan. They've been there and done it and care about the club. They know what it takes, and so what keegan didn't win anything, but he got us a danm sight closer than any one else has. To say that shearer hasn't got any experience, fair enough not in managment, but he's been at the club for years he knows how it runs and has experienced it as a player, players will respect him and the fans crtainly will too!

The problem is that the Newcastle job is a poisoned chalice; I work with some committed toon fans and their expectations, frankly, are unrealistic. They don't just want them to win - they want them to win playing flowing, 'total football'. To go from where they are now to that is a very long way - and Rome wasn't built in a day. And Shearer knows that, just like anyone else. The problem facing the board is that if they give the job to Shearer, and he fails, then they'll be criticised for appointing a candidate with no experience. Moreover, given his status on Tyneside, I think he'd be given a long run at it: too long, probably, if the club were struggling. And yet if they appoint someone else, then he is always going to be the man who took Shearer's job. I fear they're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

I honestly think that it would be the wrong decision at this time for Newcastle to appoint Alan Shearer as manager. If things didnt go right in the 1st 8 months he would have a big black mark on his managerial career and he doesn't want that as he is starting out as manager. Who ever they decide to bring in they need to hurry up and get the deal done so that manager can buy and sell players before the transfer window closes. The new manager also needs to tell the players that they need to pull their socks up and start earning their wages as the Toon fans are NOT getting their moneys worth on a saturday from their team. It was as if the team hadn't turned up in the 2nd half at Old Trafford last weekend. At the end of the day they could have a top manager like Mourinho but unless the players start playing even he would get the sack within 12 months

It's got to be KEEGAN and SHEARER. The impact of this dual appointment will be enormous and will galvanise the toon army like no other appointment possibly could. Go for it Mike and give them a decent budget. The second coming is nigh!

Looking at the posts previous. I think the way to go is with Shearer in my personal opinion. It is a no lose situation Shearer will always be a god wether he succeeds or fails (which i doubt). as far as i know he doesn't suffer fools gladly which would help out in the dressing room. experience counts for nothing if you cant get the players in the team to play with you. He is a highly respected man in and out of football. We have to give him the chance to at least try. Mort and Ashley are just being cautious in there next appointment know one really knows who they want thats why its a different favorite every day. I say Big Al all the way .
