Ipswich have refused to make any comment on reports suggesting Newcastle have accepted a bid for striker Shola Ameobi.

The 26-year-old spent time on loan at Stoke towards the end of last season but did not play a major role in their successful push for promotion to the Premier League.

The Potters nevertheless considered a permanent move for Ameobi as Newcastle admitted they were prepared to part with the player.

A deal never materialised and it now appears as though Ipswich could be set to sign Ameobi.

The Newcastle Chronicle claims the Magpies have come to an agreement with the Championship side over Ameobi's sale.

It is understood that Ipswich have put together a package that would be worth just under £4million to Newcastle.

However, Ipswich stated on their official website: "We are aware of reports today linking Ipswich Town Football Club with Shola Ameobi but we will not be making any comment on the matter."

Glenn Roeder, a former boss at St James' Park and now in charge at Norwich, could also be tempted to make an offer for Ameobi after missing out on him in March.

Former England Under 21 international Ameobi has also been linked with a move to Major League Soccer.
