Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear feels Shola Ameobi can kick-start his career after bagging his first Premier League goal in two years.

The 27-year-old striker has found himself back in the first-team fold under Kinnear and he started the match against Manchester City on Monday as a lone striker.

He rewarded Kinnear's faith by scoring just before the interval to make the match, which ended two apiece, 1-1.

Kinnear is now looking for Ameobi to build on the goal and recapture some form.

"It's going to give him massive confidence. It's a long time since he has actually stuck one away," said Kinnear.

"But I believe he has got all the ability to make himself a decent striker.

"He has got power, pace, strength. He has possibly not been punching his weight in the past, I don't know really.

"I can only go on what I see, and he has been exceptionally good for me in training.

"He has sent out all the right messages. He is a hungry fighter."
