Sebastien Bassong admits Newcastle were left hugely disappointed by Wigan's late leveller on Saturday.

The Magpies appeared to have done enough to take all three points in the crunch contest, edging in front with only three minutes left on the clock.

Latics midfielder Ryan Taylor had opened the scoring early on at St James' Park, but Michael Owen stepped off the bench to restore parity and Obafemi Martins fired Joe Kinnear's side in front with time running out.

However, former Magpies defender Titus Bramble, much-maligned during an error-strewn spell on Tyneside, snatched a dramatic equaliser to ensure the points were shared.

Both sides had entered the game in desperate need of a morale-boosting success to help aid their battle against the drop and will feel that they did enough to emerge victorious.

Expectation

Newcastle certainly felt that they were deserving of maximum points, with Bassong revealing his frustration at a missed opportunity.

"When Michael scored, we felt we would go on to win the game," said the Frenchman.

"When we scored the first goal, personally and for other players, we felt we would win the game.

"At the end, we were disappointed. We were very disappointed about the result because we had to win the game.

"We scored at the end of the game and then we conceded a goal, so it was very bad for us."
