Joe Kinnear has admitted he is looking to sell one or two players to generate funds, although he has no intention of cashing in on Shay Given.

Given has been linked with a move away from Newcastle during the transfer window after his lawyer Michael Kennedy hinted at an imminent departure last week.

Kinnear was quick to rule out an exit and has again reiterated his determination to keep hold of the goalkeeper.

The Magpies manager is looking to strengthen his squad this month and has been told by owner Mike Ashley that he can bring players in.

He accepts that he will have to let one or two members of his squad leave if he is to raise money, with speculation suggesting that the likes of Xisco, Jose Enrique, Alan Smith and Charles N'Zogbia could be moved on.

"One deal will automatically trigger the next one," Kinnear explained in The Sun.

"So I'm banging on the door hoping that the buying club will make a decision.

"I just hope it never comes down to Mike suggesting I sell Shay Given."
