Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell has been forced to pull out of the England U21 squad through injury, along with Newcastle striker Andy Carroll and Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury.

Toffees starlet Rodwell picked up a slight knock during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and will not be risked in international action.

He has left the Three Lions' training base and returned to Goodison Park for treatment.

Carroll is also missing as he nurses a niggling ankle complaint, while Lansbury has headed back to Arsenal after picking up a slight groin injury.

All three will play no part in Friday's U21 European Championship qualifier with Portugal or a home date with Lithuania next Tuesday.

"Everton's Jack Rodwell has returned to Everton with an ankle injury, picked up in his club side's fixture against Aston Villa at the weekend," read a statement on the Football Association's official website.

"Meanwhile, Newcastle United's Andy Carroll is also ruled out of the squad due to an ongoing ankle complaint, whilst Henri Lansbury has also returned to his club, Arsenal, with a slight groin injury."

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce now faces an unwelcome selection headache ahead of two crucial fixtures which could go a long way to determining whether the Young Lions will be gracing next summer's tournament in Denmark.
