Veteran defender Sol Campbell has been included in Newcastle United's 23-man squad for this season.

The 35-year-old, who arrived at St James' Park on a free transfer this summer after parting company with Arsenal, has been striving to improve his fitness as he looks towards a Magpies debut.

And Campbell made Chris Hughton's cut on Wednesday as the manager named his line-up in accordance with new regulations that Premier League clubs must submit a squad of no more than 25 players.

Also included in the party was new loan signing Hatem Ben Arfa, who linked up with the Magpies last Friday.

Familiar faces such as captain Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Danny Guthrie were also named after helping the Toon to promotion from the Championship last term.

Hughton can also call on unlimited players aged under 21, with star striker Andy Carroll one of his options in that category.

Newcastle squad: Sol Campbell, Steven Taylor, Shola Ameobi, Joey Barton, Danny Guthrie, Peter Lovenkrands, Jose Enrique, Alan Smith, Leon Best, Fabricio Coloccini, Jonas Gutierrez, Steve Harper, Kevin Nolan, Wayne Routledge, Danny Simpson, Ryan Taylor, Mike Williamson, Xisco, Fraser Forster, Tim Krul, James Perch, Cheik Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa.
