Chris Hughton fears Steven Taylor will not return from injury for at least another five weeks but insists the defender still has a part to play at Newcastle.

Taylor has yet to play for his club since their return to the Premier League after sustaining a shoulder injury in pre-season.

During his time on the sidelines the centre-back was transfer-listed following a breakdown in contract talks with Newcastle amid reports of a disagreement over wages.

Taylor, though, said on Sunday that his sole focus was on recovering from his injury, which required an operation, as soon as possible and not seeking a future move away from St James' Park.

Hughton thinks that the 24-year-old has a future at Newcastle, but does not believe he will be available for selection until at least mid-October, telling the Chronicle: "As far as Steven is concerned, we are still looking at about five weeks or so.

Situation

"We'll continue to assess his situation like we would with any injury.

"He still has a part to play for Newcastle."

There is positive news for Hughton as he could soon be boosted by the return of Danny Guthrie, who has not played this season after sustaining a knee injury.

The influential midfielder could return in the Carling Cup trip to Chelsea on 22nd August.

Hughton said: "It will still be two weeks for Danny. However, this is certainly not a long-term problem.

"We expect him back in the frame quite soon."
