Newcastle full-back Danny Simpson has pledged to come back a stronger player following a lengthy injury setback.

The 22-year-old is expecting to make a return by mid-October after suffering a ruptured tendon.

Simpson initially played through the pain barrier to play in almost the whole of the Magpies' successful Championship campaign to win promotion back to the Premier League.

However, he was told in May that he had to undergo surgery and would miss the entire summer, along with the start of the new season.

James Perch has taken his place at right-back after joining from Nottingham Forest this summer, however Simpson vowed to win his place back in Chris Hughton's first team by working harder than ever.

Desperate

"I'm the kind of person who wants it even more after a setback like I've had," he said.

"I feel desperate to get back as soon as possible. I'm delighted the lads have started well and are picking up points and doing well - and I just want to be part of it now.

"I've never really had an injury before and I miss playing so much. When you're fit and playing you don't realise how much it means sometimes but now I do.

"If anything this will make me stronger - I will come back better because of it I think."

"I don't want to put targets on it, but for me it's just a case of getting back training, getting back with the lads and doing as well as I can when I get those reserve games under my belt hopefully towards the end of this month.

"The whole injury thing has just come as a shock for me. I walked into the hospital at the end of the season having played against QPR and feeling OK, but I woke up after the operation to be told it would be six months."
