Newcastle defender Sol Campbell believes the club are fortunate to have Chris Hughton as their manager.

The pair worked together earlier in their respective careers at Tottenham and were reunited at St James' Park this summer.

Campbell joined Newcastle, last season's Championship title winners, as a free agent and has been impressed by the work of Hughton and assistant Colin Calderwood.

The North East club were in disarray both on and off the field when they were relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the 2008/09 season under the management of Toon legend Alan Shearer.

But Campbell thinks that the revolutionary work of Hughton marks the 51-year-old as a potential managerial great, as he told the Newcastle Chronicle: "The gaffer is fantastic.

"Look at what he did last season, he could be right up there with the best of them.

Gossip

"I think he's going to do great again this season too. He's passionate about his football and he's a workaholic.

"Colin Calderwood is the same and the two together have been great for Newcastle."

Centre-back Campbell added: "United are lucky to have them. They're conscious of everything, they want the club to move in the right direction.

"They've calmed down all of the gossip and concentrated on football, which is what this club should be about and how it should be run.

"Chris has done a fantastic job. You have to look at what he's done and say that.

"And when you look at the finances that everybody has to deal with in football, not just Newcastle, it's pretty impressive."

Campbell has not played for Newcastle's first team since his arrival, but he continued to push towards full fitness with a 62-minute reserve-team outing in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Tuesday night.
