Newcastle assistant boss John Carver has rubbished reports suggesting Alan Pardew could be about to relinquish the managerial reins.

Rumours have begun to circulate that Pardew is preparing to walk away from the St James' Park hot seat after being left frustrated by the backing he has received from the club's board.

The failure to land a striker during the summer transfer window is said to have left the Magpies boss considering his future.

Carver, though, is adamant that Pardew is going nowhere and remains fully focused on helping Newcastle establish themselves as a Premier League force.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "Why is his position in doubt?

"This has been a good start for us. We have picked up seven points from three matches and we are into the third round of the Carling Cup. We are going in the right direction.

Absurd

"If you had told people we would have what we have now, they would have snapped your hands off.

"How can people question the position of the manager? It's absurd."

Having missed out on the striker he desperately wanted, Pardew was on his travels again this week running the rule over potential targets.

He is hoping that further funds will be made available in the New Year and is determined to ensure that Newcastle remain one step ahead of their rivals in the pursuit of fresh faces.

Carver added: "Just because the window is shut, it doesn't mean that the work stops.

"The manager is away looking at games this week and out of the country. We work with what we have now until January and then go from there."
