Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will step up his search for a striker in January after being left frustrated in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies boss had made the acquisition of a goalscorer a top priority, but was unable to bring any of his top targets on board.

Numerous names were linked with a switch to St James' Park, with late bids lodged for Bryan Ruiz and Modibo Maiga.

Pardew was left empty-handed, though, much to his disappointment and that of the Newcastle supporters.

He is, however, aware that setbacks happen and claims he will now be pressing ahead with those already on his books.

"I have been disappointed many times in my career as a football manager," he said.

"You think you have got a signing - I remember Benni McCarthy sitting in the stadium at West Ham at 11.50pm thinking it was done, and it didn't go through, and that was seven or eight years ago when he was at his very, very best.

"These things happen, but the most important thing is to get your stock together and move on."

Criticism

Pardew will be delving back into the market in January for attacking talent. When pressed on that subject, he said: "Absolutely. Yes, absolutely."

The Magpies boss admits he feels a little let down by his board, following their failure to deliver in the transfer window, but he concedes that there is little point dwelling on the matter.

He added: "The criticism that's going to come from not getting a striker in has some validity to it because seven months (since the club sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool) is a long time.

"But I can only say that from my point of view, we put the targets in front of the board and then it comes down to financial decisions, and that financial decision didn't take place.

"We bid for three or four players to fill one position and none of them came to fruition, and that's the disappointment that we have to face."
