Alan Pardew admitted he was satisfied with the result rather than the performance after Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw by Queens Park Rangers.

QPR, captained by former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton on his debut for the London club, had the better of the game at Loftus Road.

But the Magpies held firm to pick up a point and maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

"The result was good because it is a difficult place to come and all the new players gave them a bit of a buzz," Pardew told Sky Sports.

"They were the better team and we didn't play as well as we would have liked, or as well as we have for the last few games.

"So for us in the dressing room it was one of those where you are like 'OK, we haven't played well but we've got another point and another clean sheet', so we've got to be happy with that."

Sound base

Newcastle have now conceded just one goal in their opening four league games and, while Pardew was disappointed that his side did not find much fluency against QPR, he insisted there were plenty of positives to take.

Asked if he was pleased with Newcastle's overall start to the season, he replied: "Of course, I've got to be, and our resilience was there again tonight and that's three clean sheets now, which takes some doing in the Premier League.

"It is a sound base to build on and now it is about making sure we threaten the goal enough, which we didn't do tonight, and winning games."

Questioned about Barton, Pardew added: "It wasn't the Joey Barton show, which we didn't want, but he still played well and we wish him well."
