Dan Gosling has reiterated his desire to break into the Newcastle's first team after overcoming the injury problems which have plagued him since his arrival.

The 21-year-old arrived at St James' Park from Everton last summer with a knee injury and to date he has made only two Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

But the midfielder served up a timely reminder to manager Alan Pardew with a brace in the reserves' 6-0 demolition of Norwich on Tuesday night.

And despite the club's solid start to the new campaign, the player admits he is fit and ready to take his opportunity if it arises.

Energy

Gosling said: "I will bring a lot of energy and I want to bring some goals to the midfield as well.

"We have lost 12 goals in Kevin Nolan, so if I can some goals and help the team, hopefully we will be all right."

Gosling is aware of the stiff competition he faces with the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa, when he returns to full fitness, Gabriel Obertan, Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux and Sammy Ameobi all battling for first-team opportunity.

"There is a lot of competition, but at a big club like we are, there is going to be competition," he said.

"There's going to be competition at every club in the Premier League. It's healthy, it keeps you on your toes and only brings out the best in you.

"That's always going to happen. There are comings and goings every year.

"The lads who are here now are great lads - the lads the manager has brought in are all brilliant lads and great players as well, so hopefully we will have a good season."
