Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has decided to donate his Fifa Ballon d'Or World Coach of the Year award for auction in memory of his mentor Sir Bobby Robson.

The Ballon d'Or will be sold to the highest bidder in an online auction next month.

The Portuguese boss won the accolade in 2010 after leading Italian giants Inter Milan to a historic treble in the 2009/10 campaign, but has now parted with the prestigious award to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Sir Bobby's Breakthrough Auction will run from October 8-23 and proceeds from it as well as those from a charity ball in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk will go to the foundation.

Completely astounded

The late Robson's son Mark is delighted with the act from Mourinho, who worked with the legendary English manager at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

"The entire family is completely astounded by this generous gift from Mr Mourinho," he enthused. "We are thrilled and so thankful to him.

"My dad would have been so proud by the way all the different clubs and football managers around the world are pulling together by contributing such incredible prizes."

Other donations include the chance to join England coach Fabio Capello and his squad at a training session, VIP tickets for a Manchester United game courtesy of manager Sir Alex Ferguson and a signed limited edition of Pele's autobiography.
