Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew insists his squad are not getting carried away with their fine start to the new season.

The Magpies have taken nine points from five Premier League outings following Sunday's 1-1 away draw at Aston Villa.

Their excellent form has been even more impressive considering they allowed key midfielder Joey Barton to join QPR on a free transfer while Jose Enrique also left for Liverpool.

Pardew is delighted with his players' form and the 50-year-old believes his squad will not let potential glory go to their heads.

"We haven't really got that squad, I am sure of it, but I look around the building and I just see players in good form," explained Pardew.

"But this Premier League is such that one game can knock that on its head, so you always have to be on your guard.

"It's heady heights for us, but we are not getting carried away because it is early days."

Tough

Newcastle have also faced Arsenal, Sunderland, Fulham and QPR this term and Pardew has rejected the notion that they have had it easy.

Pardew rung the changes for their midweek Carling Cup success at Nottingham Forest and he is delighted with his squad's efforts.

"There are (tougher tests to come), but we have also not had an easy start," he continued.

"Five away games - we have only had two at home - that's been lost a little bit, so even more so, the players have done terrifically.

"The players are producing. Whichever player I put out there at the moment seems to have a bit of form about them and confidence, and that bodes well."
