New Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni admits getting Stephen Ireland back into the international fold is one of his main tasks.

Manchester City ace Ireland has not played for his country since his controversial withdrawal from the squad before last September's Euro 2008 qualifier with Slovakia.

Ireland claimed he had to leave the squad because his grandmother had died only for it to be later found out that he had lied and his grandmother was alive.

Trapattoni is a big admirer of Ireland and is keen to have the midfield schemer back in the squad when he takes over in May

Situation

"Yes, I know about the situation," said Trapattoni. "He's a very, very important player for Ireland.

"I will ask my friend Sven Goran Eriksson. I will ask Liam Brady, I will ask Don Givens what is the best for the player."
