Eriksson: Quickly finds new job
Sven Goran Eriksson has been confirmed as the new coach of Mexico, just a day after being sacked by Manchester City.
The Swede was finally dismissed by City on Monday following weeks of speculation regarding his future in the Eastlands hot seat.
In the final days leading up to his departure from the City of Manchester Stadium, Eriksson had been strongly linked with the Mexico post.
Current Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was the only other name in the frame and Eriksson's appointment has now been confirmed.
Jorge Vergara, a member of the selection committee, admits the ex-England coach was an overwhelming choice to replace Hugo Sanchez.
"The decision of the club directors was unanimous," said Vergara.
Sanchez was relieved of his duties in March after the failure to qualify for the Olympic Games and Eriksson will be charged with the task of leading Mexico to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
Upon confirmation of his appointment, Eriksson said: "I want to thank the Mexican Football Federation for their confidence and support.
"Our goal is the 2010 World Cup and try to do it better than in the past."
Eriksson will not be in charge for Wednesday's friendly against Argentina, or Sunday's game with Peru in Chicago.
Later this month, Mexico meet Belize in the second stage of qualifying for the World Cup and Eriksson will assume control for the second leg on 21st June.
