The Football League has announced that Manchester City will enter this season's Carling Cup at the second-round stage of the competition.

Eight English clubs qualified for the 2008/09 term's European competitions, and will all receive byes into the third round of the Carling Cup.

City became the ninth Premier League side to secure involvement in Europe following their qualification via Uefa's Fair Play league.

The Football League would have been left with an odd number of participants for the third round had they given Mark Hughes' team a bye.

Therefore, Football League bosses have decided City should enter in the second round, which is scheduled to be played on 26th and 27th August.

As a result, the Eastlands club now face a fixture clash, with the second leg of their Uefa Cup second qualifying round fixture against FC Midtjylland due to take place in Denmark on 28th August.
