Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes that his career at Eastlands has been moving in reverse.

The 23-year-old made his first-team debut in 2004 when Arsenal visited Manchester, but he remains on the fringes of City's starting XI.

Onuoha is expected to handed what will be a rare appearance this season when the Gunners visit again on Wednesday night in the Carling Cup quarter-finals and he is frustrated at his limited opportunities.

The League Cup tends to be when managers use their second-string and the Academy graduate is not happy that, after playing 30 times for his club last season, he is not a regular this term.

Disappointed

"It is disappointing not to play, given what I did last season and compared to then I do feel I may have gone backwards," he said in The Independent.

Onuoha, though, is confident that he has a future at City, who have spent heavily in order to chase silverware and a place in the UEFA Champions League.

"I don't think it is impossible to get back to where I was," he said.

Onuoha added: "In my time here I've never gone through a season when I've been first choice, whether through injury or selection.

"So I've seen this type of thing before and I always seem to end up playing. I never see people come in and think 'that's it'. It's the people who really want to be here who'll be here the longest and when it matters."
