Manchester City will be without winger Martin Petrov for up to a month with a knee injury.

Petrov has started just one of City's last four outings in all competitions and came off the bench in their midweek draw at Stoke.

The Bulgaria international will now miss the visit of Liverpool on Sunday and their upcoming games with Stoke and Chelsea.

He is unlikely to return until the middle of March, and the news of Petrov's absence is another blow to manager Roberto Mancini after losing midfielder Patrick Vieira to a three-game ban.

City did bolster their left-wing options in January following the capture of exciting talent Adam Johnson from Middlesbrough.

Johnston started the draw at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday and he is likely to keep his place against Liverpool, who are one of City's rivals for a place in next season's UEFA Champions League.
