SHEFFIELD UNITED have handed a trial to Middlesbrough defender Jason Gavin.

Gavin has found himself out-of-favour at The Riverside and has been out on loan at Grimsby.

Blades boss Neil Warnock is keen to bolster his defence and will have a close look at Gavin after having him recommended to him by Dean Windass.

"We are short in central defence and I've asked about Jason, and also had a word with Deano about him," Warnock told the club's official website.

"I'm not sure whether we are looking at him for this or next season - but with him training with us it gives us a good chance to have a good look at him.

"Jason is a big lad and we will play him in the reserves and that gives us the opportunity to assess what he has got."

Meanwhile, United have cut short Tommy Mooney's loan spell at Bramall Lane.

Warnock has decided to send Mooney back to Birmingham as he feels he now has now enough cover up front.
