Southgate wants a cup run

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed the club will be taking this year's Carling Cup seriously.

Premier League teams often utilise the competition to give some of their younger players a taste of first-team action.

However, Southgate, who helped Boro win the cup in 2004 with a 2-1 success over Bolton at the Millennium Stadium, has no plans to take the competition lightly.

With the club's first silverware fresh in Southgate's mind, the promising manager is keen to emulate their success this time around by at least putting a decent run together - starting with Yeovil on Tuesday.

"Maybe we cannot win the Premier League, but we can win the Carling Cup," stated Southgate.

Decent run

"We have done it before, and we will be looking for a decent run in the competition.

"It is a competition that we can genuinely win. We have to believe that.

"It is a tournament we can go a long way in, and we have done that in the past.

"We need a good run in the Carling Cup. So much about cups is in the lap of the gods, but we have to maintain the form that we have shown already."
