Skysports.com understands Middlesbrough are lining up a move for Plymouth forward Jamie Mackie.

Mackie's future at Home Park has been the subject of speculation for some time with a number of clubs thought to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Nottingham Forest and Derby have been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old, but now Middlesbrough have entered the race for the powerful frontrunner.

Boro boss Gordon Strachan is keen to bolster his attacking options and has been linked with the likes of Scott McDonald and Kris Boyd in recent weeks.

However, he could turn his attentions Mackie, who be a cheaper option for Boro and Plymouth could face a fight to resist a sizeable offer for the player.

New Burnley boss Brian Laws is also thought to be weighing up a move for Mackie, but Boro are thought to leading the chase for his signature.

Plymouth signed Mackie from Exeter City for £145,000 in January 2008 and he has scored 12 goals in 81 games for the Pilgrims.
