Didier Digard admits he never thought his spell with Middlesbrough would have turned out like it did.

The Middlesbrough midfielder was loaned to Nice in January.

Boro boss Gordon Strachan allowed Digard to leave, and he looks unlikely to have a long-term future on Teesside.

And Digard admits, he did not see his Boro career going the way it has - after suffering relegation last season.

"When I joined Middlesbrough, I never thought I could endure a such difficult period," Digard told L'Equipe.

"The club was ambitious, but after good start, it felt off and never could react.

"The new coach at Middlesbrough, Gordon Strachan, didn't rely on me anymore. Nice had an objective: remaining in Le Championnat.

"I would have signed immediately for a team in competition for the national title, but I didn't have such an opportunity.

"Anyway, it is very nice that way. I want to feel helpful, bring something to the club, and participate to achieve the objective."

Meanwhile, Boro are still said to be keeping an eye on the French market.

Indeed reports claim that Boro are keeping close tabs on Brest keeper Steve Elana - who has been performing excellently for Ligue 2's surprise package.
