Middlesbrough defender David Wheater is likely to miss the closing two games of the season due to an ankle injury.

Wheater picked up the problem in training prior to Saturday's 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion which ended Boro's faint hopes of making the play-offs.

He has damaged ankle ligaments and is now expected to sit out Saturday's game at home to Coventry City and the final day trip to Leicester City.

Boro boss Gordon Strachan told the club's official website: "It's unfortunate because I think David and Mick [Stephen] McManus were getting something together. We went about eight games undefeated so they have done well.

"It was just a freak accident in training, so it's a pity for the big fella because he was finding a bit of form and I think he enjoyed playing with Mick.

"I don't think he will be fit for the rest of the season."

The home-grown centre-half is also in line for a new contract, with the 23-year-old having a year remaining on his current deal.
