Marvin Emnes' agent admits his client could be forced to leave Middlesbrough in search of first-team football.

The Dutch winger joined Boro in 2008, with Gareth Southgate snapping him up from Sparta Rotterdam.

He has struggled to make an impact in English football, though, making sporadic appearances over the course of his two years in the North East.

Current boss Gordon Strachan has made it clear that he favours other options, with a number of fresh faces drafted in during the January transfer window.

That has forced Emnes to consider his options, with showdown talks set to be staged over the summer before he decides what his next step will be.

Transfer

"It's clear that since Southgate left and Strachan came things became worse for Emnes," the 21-year-old's agent, Eduard Burleson, told VoetbalPrimeur.nl.

"He is playing a lot less than he would have wanted. That Strachan signed a bunch of former Celtic players in January also influenced this.

"We'll be talking to Middlesbrough about his future in the coming month. We want to know what their plans with Marvin are.

"We already had the same sort of conversation a few months ago, but the club didn't want to talk about a loan or sale then. They wanted to wait until the end of the season.

"Emnes knows that he needs matches. If the manager knows that he won't give him matches then perhaps it's best to look for a transfer. But for now we will wait until we speak to the club."
