Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan has cancelled plans to go to the World Cup finals this summer.

Strachan was due to work with the media in South Africa for the duration of the month-long tournament.

However, Strachan has now revealed that he has too much work to do behind the scenes at The Riverside.

"I'm not going," he told the club's official website. "I've got too much to do in the next three weeks.

"It would only leave seven or eight days for a family holiday and I've got to do my work here.

"I get paid to do my job here and I have to get this job right.

"You can't just fly back from South Africa if you want to meet a player or discuss something with Keith (Lamb)."

Staff shuffle

One of Strachan's jobs is overhauling his backroom staff and, after the departures of Colin Cooper, Stephen Pears and Martin Scott, chief scout Dave Leadbeater has followed them.

Strachan is now set to introduce his own men with former Newcastle scout Ray Clarke coming in, along with goalkeeping coach Jim Blyth.

It is also believed that to replace Cooper, Strachan has offered Gary McAllister the first-team coach's role - although he distanced himself from reports suggesting he was looking to recruit Neil Lennon if he did not stay at Celtic.

"There are people out there I've worked with before, and they know me and know my mind," said Strachan.

"They know exactly what I'm after. I can't experiment any more.

"We'll look into things in the next couple of days, but I'm not daft, and I've already tried to start putting things in place."
