Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb believes it is crucial the club earns promotion back into the Premier League next season.

Boro failed to make an immediate return to the top flight following relegation in 2009 as they finished 11th in the Championship last season.

The Teessiders are still receiving parachute payments and have already boosted their squad with the signing of Rangers striker Kris Boyd and Chalrton midfielder Nicky Bailey so far this summer.

Lamb therefore believes Boro are in good shape to mount a promotion bid but feels they must take advantage this season or face losing the trappings of being a Premier League club.

"It's vital for the club that we win promotion," he told the Middlesbrough Gazette.

"This club needs to be back in the Premier League. The stadium, the training ground - everything is geared for top-flight football.

"We need to reach the top flight in order to sustain all of our facilities.

"If we don't do it this year then the club will not be terminally damaged, but naturally it will make it more difficult."
