Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has hailed the spirit at the club, insisting it is all down to Tony Mowbray.

Gibson says the 'spirit of 86' has returned to the club.

Spirit of 86 refers to the team which was built by Bruce Rioch in 1986, directly after the club went into liquidation.

Despite their troubles the club was reborn, and under Rioch, with Mowbray as captain, they went on to to claim consecutive promotions.

Gibson was one of the directors who helped save the club, before becoming chairman and he is delighted with how Mowbray has helped turn around the club.

Boro have made an unbeaten start to the new season, and have not lost away from home since April.

"The spirit of '86 was unique and was not down to one man, it was down to players and management together. We saw some of that spirit last season," he said.

"There is a different kind of discipline around the place.

"All of a sudden the spirit starts to grow and we end up going on a great run in the last 12 games.

"Our remit to Tony was to keep us in this division and we finished with 62 points."

Meanwhile, Boro have been boosted by the return to fitness of Merouane Zemmama and Andy Halliday.
