Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet has won the Championship Manager of the Month award for August, with Marvin Emnes taking the player prize.

Poyet has seen his Seagulls side make a seamless transition to life in the Championship following last season's League One title success.

The Uruguayan, who made some astute signings during the transfer window, including the capture of Craig Mackail-Smith, has guided Brighton to an unbeaten start to the campaign.

A last-gasp victory over Doncaster Rovers on the opening day marked the first competitive game at the Amex Stadium, while the Seagulls have also won away to Portsmouth and Cardiff City.

Following a home draw with Blackpool, they ended the month with a 2-0 home success over fellow promoted side Peterborough United to sit top of the table by one point.

Brighton have also progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup and will entertain Liverpool later this month after knocking out Sunderland in the previous round.

The other contenders for the award were Southampton boss Nigel Adkins, whose team have also enjoyed a positive start following promotion.

Derby County manager Nigel Clough and Middlesbrough's Tony Mowbray were the other bosses in the frame for the accolade.

Boro, though, have gained consolation in the player category after Dutch striker Emnes scored seven goals in as many appearances in August.

Emnes scored in the opening day draw with Portsmouth and netted the winner at Leeds United either side of grabbing a hat-trick against Walsall in the Carling Cup.

The 23-year-old, who signed a new contract last month, also notched in the 3-1 success at Barnsley and 1-1 home draw with Coventry City.
