Wigan boss Steve Bruce believes Manchester City are still some way off from breaking into the top four.

Cash-rich City have been tipped to challenge the so-called 'big four' following the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group.

City's new owners are ambitious to make the club a force at home and abroad, but speaking ahead of this weekend's meeting between the two sides, Bruce says it will take time for City to compete with the Premier League's big boys.

"It is going to take a monumental task to get there [in the top four] obviously, even with the funds that have been made available to Mark [Hughes] I would have thought, and that is looking from the outside," Bruce told Sky Sports News.

"If you look at Chelsea, for instance, it wasn't just overnight and it happened over a period of a few years and sustained investment.

"Obviously you have got to blend the team and you have got to try and assemble a squad that is capable of mounting a challenge against teams who have been there and done that for the last ten years and certainly in Manchester United's case the last 20 years and Arsenal.

"They [Man City] have got a wonderful opportunity obviously with having great wealth, but it doesn't necessarily buy you success."
