Wigan defender Paul Scharner believes his international return has irked boss Steve Bruce.

The Austrian retired from national service after falling out with his country's FA, missing out on a spot at Euro 2008 as a result.

However, with a new management team now in place, Scharner returned from the international wildness to play his part in a shock World Cup qualifying success over France in September.

He has paid a hefty price for his decision to return to the fold, though, as he has fallen out of favour at Wigan.

Despite being a virtual ever-present last season he has been restricted to just three starts this term, a situation which has seen him question his manager's motives.

Resentful

"I have paid the price for making my national comeback," he said.

"I'm in a difficult situation at Wigan and not getting on well with Steve Bruce at the moment.

"We will have to see how long this state of affairs goes on for. He said I shouldn't play against France last month, but I did and he seems to be resentful towards me.

"I will wait and see what happens."
