Wigan manager Steve Bruce admits he still dreams of managing Newcastle United.

The Latics chief once turned down the chance to take charge at St James' Park when Sir Bobby Robson left.

Now Bruce admits he has not given up hope of taking up the hot-seat at his hometown club in the future.

"The only genuine opportunity I had was after Sir Bobby left," said Bruce.

"But I'd just signed a new deal at Birmingham and signed five or six players that summer; I felt out of loyalty to Birmingham at the time that I couldn't go.

"Do I regret it? Yes of course.

"They were my club when I was a boy and I used to crawl under the turnstiles to watch them.

"Will I ever manage Newcastle? I don't know. Maybe one day.

"You never know because football sends you down many paths."
