Mexican side Necaxa claim they have started negotiations to sell Hugo Rodallega Martinez to Wigan Athletic.

Martinez has been linked with a £4million move to Wigan in January after impressing since joining Necaxa in 2007.

Reports had suggested a deal had already been agreed, although Latics boss Steve Bruce was quick to play down those rumours.

However, Bruce confirmed he is exploring Central and South America for new signings following the success of Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa and Antonio Valencia at the JJB Stadium.

Colombian striker Martinez is understood to be a target for Bruce, who has doubts over the long-term futures of both Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki.

Necaxa president Roberto Munoz has now revealed that discussions have begun regarding a possible deal for Martinez in the New Year.

Munoz told Esmas TV: "Wigan got in touch with us with the intention of signing Hugo Rodallega and we are having negotiations."
