Michael Brown sees no reason why Wigan cannot secure a top half finish in the Premier League this season.

The Latics achieved that target during their first year in the top-flight back in 2006, taking tenth spot.

They have flirted with relegation in the two campaigns since then, but appear to be back on course under the careful guidance of Steve Bruce.

Wigan sit seventh with 12 games remaining this term, a standing they have enjoyed for several weeks.

They are currently in the middle of a six-game winless run, and face an unenviable trip to Chelsea on Saturday, but Brown is confident the Latics can cling on to their lofty perch.

"We're doing okay at the moment and another draw at Chelsea on Saturday would be fantastic," he told the Wigan Evening Post.

"Offer us 0-0 now and I think most of us would take it. I'm not being negative saying that - a point there would be an excellent result and take us closer to where we want to be.

"We've been up in seventh place for quite a while now and with the points buffer we built up a couple of months ago, that was always going to be the case.

"It's a fantastic achievement for this club to be where we are in the table, and it would be great if we could finish the season in the top area. I don't see why we can't manage that.

"After Chelsea we've got West Ham, Sunderland and Hull coming up, all teams who are quite close to us.

"We've got 35 points at the moment, this time last year we had 23, so we're doing much better. You don't feel as much pressure playing the games.

"There's still work to be done, we've got another few points to get before we hit 40 points, which was our target at the beginning of the season."
