Chris Kirkland has urged Wigan's supporters to play their part in the push for a top-half finish.

The Latics brought a poor run of results to an end on Saturday as they defeated Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Kirkland accepts that Wigan are not quite safe yet but he is not too concerned about the threat of relegation and is thinking more about securing a place in the top ten.

Steve Bruce's men, currently in eighth spot with 38 points, face struggling Hull City at home this weekend and Kirkland realises the importance of picking up another win.

The goalkeeper is also looking ahead to next season and a bright future for the club.

"We need our fans to come out and give us some great support against Hull, and if we can get a win it will go a long, long way to keeping us up there," he told the club's official website.

"I personally don't think 38 points is enough, and being greedy I hope we can get even more points and a few more wins and look to consolidate a top-ten finish.

"It would be great for the likes of our chairman who has pumped so much money into the club, so if we can finish as high as possible it would generate more money to maybe buy more players and keep improving.

"That's what it's all about in football these days, you've got to keep moving forward."
