Ajax have made contact with Mido about a possible move back to Amsterdam, skysports.com understands.

The Egyptian international has returned to pre-season training with Championship side Middlesbrough after finishing last term on loan at West Ham United.

Upon linking back up with Boro, Mido declared his ambition to earn a place in Gordon Strachan's side.

However, Strachan is ready to allow Mido - one of the club's highest earners - to leave the club and Dutch sources suggest that Boro have agreed to allow Mido to leave on a free transfer.

Skysports.com understands that there has been contact between Mido and Ajax, who he played for from 2001 to 2003 after he was signed from Gent.

He is now considering a move back to Holland, but may have to take a drop from his current salary.

Three arrivals?

Ajax are hopeful of bolstering their squad with up to three players in the coming week as, in addition to Mido, they are also understood to be closing in on AZ Alkmaar forward Mounir El Hamdaoui.

The Moroccan international held talks with Ajax over the weekend after the two clubs agreed a fee, but the move had looked set to collapse when the 26-year-old could not agree personal terms.

But it seems that the former Tottenham man has now agreed a four-year deal with the club.

The final player in what could be a triple swoop is reportedly Wigan's Daniel De Ridder.

Another former Ajax man, De Ridder originally left the club in 2005 to join Spanish side Celta Vigo and he has subsequently spent time with Birmingham and Wigan.

The Latics loaned him to Hapoel Tel Aviv last summer but, despite having a year left on his contract at the DW Stadium, he does not feature in Roberto Martinez's first-team plans and he is now believed to be in talks with Ajax.
