Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that he would have walked away from the DW Stadium had the fans managed to hound boss Roberto Martinez out of the club.

Martinez found himself under pressure after Wigan lost their first two Premier League games of the season and conceded 10 goals in the process.

However, Whelan gave Martinez his backing and the Spaniard eased the pressure on him by guiding his side to a shock win at Tottenham last weekend.

Whelan is a big fan of Martinez and he claims if fans had forced the manager out he would also have quit the club.

"I rate Roberto highly and said to the fans, if you want his head, you'll get mine as well," said Whelan.

"Had they (the supporters) insisted, and even if we would have lost at Tottenham and they start crying for his head and had he asked to go, I would definitely have resigned with him."
