Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole knows he owes a debt of gratitude to former club Wigan.

Cattermole makes his first return to the DW Stadium on Saturday since leaving for the Black Cats in 2009, where he was reunited with boss Steve Bruce.

Bruce was the man who brought the tough-tackling midfielder to Wigan from Middlesbrough in 2008 and he saw the player flourish.

And Bruce invested heavily to ensure the 22-year-old followed him to the Stadium of Light, forking out an initial £6million fee to secure his services once again.

Great club

Cattermole remembers his solitary season in Lancashire fondly, recognising it provided a platform to launch his fledgling career.

He told Sunderland's official website: "I have not been back there yet, but Wigan was a great club for me.

"They were a great stepping stone in between Middlesbrough and here. Everyone at the club was brilliant, from the chairman down.

"Obviously the manager and the staff came here. I loved my time there and I have a lot of respect for them."
