Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has revealed the knee injury suffered by Hugo Rodallega is not as serious as first feared.

Rodallega had to be stretchered from the field towards the end of the Latics' 3-1 defeat to Everton over the weekend.

It was initially thought that there might have been serious ligament damage that could have kept the Colombian on the sidelines for several months.

However, Martinez is now much more optimistic about his chances of getting Rodallega back in action relatively quickly.

While it is still too early to put a precise timescale on the 26-year-old's return, Martinez is delighted by the findings of the initial scans.

He told the club's official website: "The scans came back really positively, it doesn't seem there are any big concerns in terms of the structure of the knee.

"We won't know how long he's exactly going to be out but what's clear is that the injury is not as bad as we first thought.

"It's fantastic news and now we are going to make sure that Hugo recovers well and gets back on the football pitch as quickly as possible.

"He's the sort of player who lives to play the game, so he will be desperate to get fit.

"It's going to be a difficult period but in the same way it's going to allow us to work on different aspects of his full fitness and we'll make sure that when he comes back he is a stronger player than the one who suffered the challenge."
