Charlton Athletic full-back Grant Basey will miss the rest of the season as he requires surgery on his ankle ligament injury.

Basey suffered the problem in the 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers earlier this month when he was hurt after just 12 seconds of the game by Dominic Blizzard.

Initial fears the 21-year-old had broken his leg were allayed, but scans showed up ankle ligament damage which requires surgery.

The youngster will go under the knife on Friday and Addicks boss Phil Parkinson confirmed the defender will not return before the end of the season.

Blow

"Grant will have an operation and will be out for the season," Parkinson told the club's official website.

"We won't know exactly how long he'll be out for until after the operation.

"It's a blow. The tackle has completely ruptured his ligaments.

"The specialist wants to go in there and have a look and then he'll be able to give us an accurate assessment of when he'll be back."
