Holders Southampton crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the first round stage on Tuesday.

Swindon progressed at the Saints' expense, while Aldershot, Charlton, Brentford and Exeter are also safely through.

Southampton would have had ambitions of enjoying another day out at Wembley this season, having seen off Carlisle in 2009/10, but saw two goals from Swindon's Vincent Pericard and another from his strike partner Charlie Austin condemn them to a 3-0 defeat on home soil.

Charlton suffered no such difficulty in front of their own supporters as a solitary strike from Therry Racon saw them past Dagenham & Redbridge at The Valley.

Stevenage's first foray into the JPT ended in defeat as a Robbie Simpson strike proved to be enough for Brentford in their meeting at Broadhall Way.

Exeter prevailed over 10-man Yeovil at Huish Park, with a brace from much-travelled frontman Jamie Cureton and a late effort from Ryan Harley seeing them to a 3-1 victory.

Aldershot will also be in the draw for round two as goals either side of the interval from Danny Hylton and Damian Spencer helped them to eliminate League Two new boys Oxford.

Torquay will be joining them, but only after they overcame South Coast rivals Bournemouth 3-0 on penalties following a goalless draw at The Fitness First Stadium.

Southend and Gillingham also drew a blank in their all-League Two encounter, but it was the Shrimpers who progressed courtesy of a 4-3 shootout success.
