Oldham Athletic have confirmed the sale of highly-rated midfielder Dale Stephens to League One rivals Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

Skysports.com revealed on Tuesday that the Addicks had won the race to sign the 20-year-old, who was attracting interest from several clubs.

However, Oldham confirmed in a statement on their official website that Charlton were the only club to make an offer which met their requirements.

Stephens joined Oldham from Bury in 2008, but it is only in the past 18 months that he had established himself as a first-team regular.

He also spent a spell on loan at Southampton towards the end of last season and becomes Chris Powell's latest recruit at The Valley.

Powell is trying to build a squad capable of winning promotion to the Championship and is also closing in on a three-year deal for Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Danny Green.
