Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood was close to returning to former club Southend United last season, the player has revealed.

After an impressive four-year spell with the Shrimpers, contributing to two successive promotions, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy secured his signature in a £1.5 million deal last summer.

The 24-year old, however, has struggled to establish himself at Molineux and was all set to make a shock return to Roots Hall during the last campaign to help the side with their promotion bid before McCarthy pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.

Speaking to Southend's official website, Eastwood said: "I did have talks with Steve Tilson and I told him I was interested in coming back to Southend towards the end of the season.

"Wolves said I wasn't allowed to go out on loan to another club in the same division and at one point I really thought I was going to be heading back to Southend. But in the end Wolves stopped me going there, which was a shame because it would have been good."

Eastwood is expected to leave the Black Country club before the season begins in August, though he admits that nothing is confirmed as yet.

"I am not sure what will happen but I don't think I will be at Wolves next season," he added.
