Paterson: Judged on own merits

Steve Caldwell does not want to compare Burnley new boy Martin Paterson with former striker Kyle Lafferty.

Paterson has completed a £1million move to Turf Moor from Scunthorpe United following Lafferty's switch to Scottish giants Rangers.

Clarets captain Caldwell is confident Paterson can make an impact up front after the exit of fellow Northern Ireland forward Lafferty.

However, Caldwell is keen for Paterson to be judged on his own merits, rather than as a direct replacement for Lafferty.

"As for stepping into Kyle's shoes I don't know if it is going to be a case of that," said Caldwell.

"Patty's older and we will be expecting more maturity from him right away.

"He's got the experience, he's played a lot of football, but I don't like to compare him to Kyle as I think that everybody should be judged on their own merits."
