Southampton defender Andrew Davies is having a medical at Stoke ahead of his proposed move to the Britannia Stadium.

The Potters agreed a fee with the Championship club at the weekend and the player is now discussing personal terms with the Premier League new boys.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is keen to bolster his defence and he is hoping to complete a move for the former Middlesbrough man.

Southampton chief Jan Poortvliet admitted the cash-strapped club had no choice but to sell Davies.

Financial pressures

He told the club's official website: "Andrew has been out injured since my arrival and I have not seen him play.

"His agent has been keen for him to complete a deal away from the club and if players and agents feel that way then it doesn't help the rest of the team.

"Andrew Davies is one of the high earners at the club and we've had no secret of the financial pressures that have been placed on us by the bank."
