Colin Calderwood will not rush Nathan Tyson and Andy Cole back into his starting XI.

The Nottingham Forest boss was able to include the strike duo on the bench for Saturday's 3-2 victory over Watford, with Tyson making a goalscoring impact on entering the fray.

Cole also made his first appearance of the season late on, but both men are not yet ready for a full 90 minutes.

Calderwood intends to give the pair another run out against Sunderland in the Carling Cup second round on Wednesday, a game which can be seen live on Sky Sports 2, but is wary of giving them too much action too soon.

Recuperate

"It is good to have them back. Neither of them are close to being ready to start a game. But the best development for them now will be getting bits and pieces here and there," the Scottish coach told the Nottingham Evening Post.

"We will get them another week of training and they will be involved in the game against Sunderland as well, in the Carling Cup, until they are ready to start matches.

"But that is likely to be well beyond the international break, before they are ready. We only have one more league game before that, so we will have the chance to recuperate.

"It is good to have them back and, beyond that, we will have Lewis McGugan and Kelvin Wilson back as well. Nathan is a bit further ahead of Andy, which is why he came on first (against Watford). They will both score goals for us and it makes us a stronger team having them back.

"We can bring Emile Sinclair on as well, who brings us a lot of pace. But we need that experience and guidance that Andy can give us.

"We will have a few choices when they are all fit. But that is why you don't worry about what your first choice team is going to be - because there will always be injuries and other problems.

"But you always want options and that is what we have at the minute, that is what fills you with hope. We looked pretty dangerous a lot of the time, which was certainly encouraging.

"But we have to analyse the game a little. It was a great advert for English football and great entertainment for everyone who was here - and we have come out smiling because we won."

Calderwood was also delighted to see Forest pick up their first maximum points haul of the season against the Hornets.

"We did not want to go three games without a win in the league and we always wanted to pick up a couple of wins in our first five or six games," he said.
